The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus will give flagships a boost on May 20

Expected for weeks, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus seems about to be officially presented by Qualcomm. This new version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, slightly refined, would be unveiled on May 20 if we are to believe an invitation shared in China by the brand.

We already talked about it on FrandroidQualcomm has been working for several months on the launch of a “Plus” version of its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This new chip would notably allow better energy control, but also improved performance in terms of graphics.

Today we learn from WCCFTech that its launch would be imminent, an invitation published by Qualcomm on Chinese social networks mentioning an official announcement on May 20. Previously, information suggested that the chip would be presented before the summer. Obviously we are there, even if Qualcomm speaks for the moment only of a presentation of “new productsduring an event broadcast live.

Less heating and more graphics power on the “Plus” version?

If we believe persistent rumors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus would in any case be engraved in 4 nm by TSMC. As a reminder, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was until now engraved by Samsung Foundry, but with a less efficient 4 nm engraving process than that of the Taiwanese giant, which would justify this change. Since its launch, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has indeed suffered from energy problems that can impact the use of certain smartphones. Overheating concerns, in particular, which Qualcomm would like to get rid of by switching to TSMC.

According to all logic, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus would in any case make its mark on Samsung’s next two folding smartphones (the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4), before settling on board most premium Android smartphones expected in the second half of 2022. We will then have plenty of time to check whether the switch to TSMC’s 4 nm process pays off in terms of energy efficiency compared to Samsung’s engraving. Start of response expected this Friday.
