The SNCF makes an about-face and finally admits the validity of the France Identity app

The SNCF recognizes that the France identity application is valid for proving one’s identity on trains, during checks. It was one of the company’s managers who took charge of the recall. The classic national identity card remains accepted.

This time, it’s official: the France Identity application is indeed valid to prove your identity on the TGV. The news was confirmed on the evening of May 28 by one of the highest officials of the SNCF, Alain Krakovitch, in particular in charge of Voyages SNCF, the branch which deals with very high speed transport (TGV).

On the social network He confirmed that the mobile application is “ now accepted to prove identity on board. » Instructions are given to the controllers so that they take them into account – the person concerned suggests, however, that final hiccups cannot be ruled out. Information sharing is always “ in progress. »

A new option to prove your identity

For the most tech-savvy French people, this switch will be a relief. Previously, we had seen testimonies emerge on the internet showing dismay at the refusal to consider France Idabilité as valid proof. This can result in a fine of 140 euros in the event of failure to present an identity document.

The status of France Identity sparked a curious exchange on X between the official account dedicated to the TGV INOUI transport offer and the one in charge of the application. For the French National Railway Company, its opinion was summarized as follows: you must have your national identity card on you, in its physical form, period.

However, France Identity is an official government application whose aim is, precisely, to accommodate identity papers – and, therefore, to be a dematerialized alternative to the traditional CNI. It is nevertheless true that at the time of the dispute over X, France Identity was still in the full development phase (beta).

The general public launch of the app took place in February 2024. The tool can accommodate a digital version of the national electronic identity card (and only this one; the previous version is not compatible), but also Driving license. To the passenger, the pink driving license can be exchanged for the new model.

Basically, these variations on the app have the same status as their “paper” counterpart. One solution does not replace the other: it is always possible to present the captains with a traditional identity card. Other documents can also be presented, such as the passport, driving license, certain visas or residence permit.
