The Sony WF-1000XM5 would correct the main flaw of their predecessors

Two years after the arrival of the WF-1000XM4 on the market, Sony is about to market its new WF-1000XM5. Leaked visuals tell us in particular about the size of these new wireless headphones … and good news, it would be more compact.

Sony’s habits in terms of high-end wireless headphones are rather easy to pin down: the brand generally launches a new pair every two years. Logically, the Japanese manufacturer should therefore soon unveil its new WF-1000XM5s this year… two full years after the debut of its WF-1000XM4s, marketed in 2021. Sony’s high-end intras have been certified by the FCC.

Following this certification, mandatory to launch an electronic device on the American market, some photos have leaked. Enough to give us a fairly precise idea of the design adopted by the WF-1000XM5, but also to see that Sony would make them more compact than their predecessors. A very welcome novelty when the XM4 suffered, precisely, from a little too much space.

Sony WF-1000XM5: it would be for very soon…

Among the other changes visible on the three shared shots, the switch to two pins for recharging inside the case (compared to three previously) and the adoption of a 5V / 230 mAh battery larger than that of the XM4s: their case was indeed content with a 5V / 140 mAh battery only. This modification could lead to faster charging for the earphones.

We also see a movement of the charging light. Formerly installed in the box, it is now positioned on the front of the latter. The case of the XM5s would retain a matte coating for the rest, but could be a little smaller than that of the XM4s. However, it is difficult to be certain at this stage, especially since the battery would be stronger.

It remains to be seen when these new WF-1000XM5s could arrive. The custom is generally to consider that certification by the FCC is a harbinger of an upcoming launch. Under these conditions, we would not be surprised to see Sony formalize its new headphones in the coming weeks. As a reminder, the WF-1000XM4 had for their part been marketed in June 2021.
