Sony would draw LG’s new technology to offer a real optical zoom of X4 to X9 while removing the photo block bump.
If LG shines at CES 2023 with its new Oled G3, C3 and others, the brand has recently made noise for another type of technology. LG Innotek has unveiled a lens allowing a sliding zoom from X4 to X9, or varying between all focal lengths from 100 to 225 mm.
Optical zoom is relatively new on smartphones. In 2022, Sony unveiled the Xperia 1 IV, the first phone to feature this kind of technology. Its main weakness was the relatively small focal range offered, 85-125mm. We are therefore not surprised to learn that Sony would be in the running to equip itself with LG technology on its next flagship.
Sony tries something different
According to what the leaker Zackbuks, the Sony Xperia 1 V should thus integrate LG technology for its telephoto lens. This choice, if confirmed, could also mean that the Xperia 1 V would completely flatten its photo unit, since the lens developed by LG theoretically allows it to be completely eliminated.
Another important element in this news: so far, Sony has been developing its own lenses and thus has significant expertise in this area. It would therefore be surprising if the manufacturer did not equip its own phones with it.
By choosing this solution, Sony would be able to solve two major problems with smartphone photography in one fell swoop: the famous camera bumpand the lack of optical zoom.
According to SumahoDigest, the Xperia 1 V would have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Based on a Reddit post, the site claims that the new chip could almost double the performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 of the Xperia 1 IV from 6000 points on Geekbench to almost 11,600 points. However, be careful with leaks. via Geekbench, which can be faked quite easily.
As the very reliable site points out NotebookcheckSony seems ahead of schedule this year and could launch the Xperia 1 V as early as April, with a worldwide release around June.
