The SPA warns of the saturation of its shelters due to a lack of adoptions


MISTREATMENT – The humane society has warned of the level of saturation of its shelters due to a lack of adoptions. The year 2021 was also marked by an upsurge in reports of abuse to the association.

More than 7,000 animals are currently taken in by the SPA, causing the saturation of the 62 shelters of the animal defense association, due to a lack of adoption. For lack of space, it regretted in a press release “not being able to take in new residents despite numerous requests for abandonment”.

“The year 2021, impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, saw the SPA again collect more than 45,000 animals, like 2019, and made 40,142 responsible adoptions possible”, explains the press release. “The first instinct for acquiring a pet should be adoption from a shelter to fight against abandonment and empower owners.“, called for his part the president of the association Jacques-Charles Fombonne, who wishes “a real awareness of the French”.

Adopt from a shelter when acquiring an animal

In addition to the abandonment of dogs and cats, new pets, which include reptiles or rodents, increased by 56% last year. “These favorite animals, available for purchase on the internet and in stores, are the very embodiment of the fight against the animal-object”, comments the SPA which “militant” so that the recent law prohibiting the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores from 2024 is extended to these animals.

The Animal Protection department of the SPA has also been marked by an upsurge in reports of abuse. The number of investigations increased by 17% compared to 2020 and the association’s legal department indicates that it has instituted civil proceedings with the filing of complaints on 343 occasions and 349 hearings have been held.

In 2021, the SPA nevertheless saved 131% more animals in suffering compared to 2020. Another positive note: the number of equine adoptions has practically doubled since 2019 to reach the number of 154. Pervenchères, in the Orne, 61 horses, donkeys and ponies are now available for adoption.
