“the spirit of responsibility prevailed”, welcomes Borne

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne welcomed on Friday the adoption at first reading by the deputies of the “emergency” bill for purchasing power, believing that “the spirit of responsibility prevailed to protect our fellow citizens”.

“The emergency bill for purchasing power is adopted! The spirit of responsibility prevailed to protect our fellow citizens from the consequences of inflation,” rejoiced the head of government in a tweet.

“Building majorities of projects to provide concrete solutions to the French, we have succeeded”, also underlined Ms. Borne, who had insisted at length on the search for compromise during her general policy statement on July 6.

After four days of discussions and after a whole night of heated debates, the first major text of the legislature was voted on shortly before 6am by 341 votes for, 116 against and 21 abstentions.

It was adopted with the contribution of the votes of deputies from LR and RN who welcomed certain measures going “in the right direction”, while the left denounced a text akin to a “declaration of war on wages”.

“It was an essential text, it is important that it could be adopted, even if indeed we had debates which were sometimes very chaotic”, underlined the patron saint of the deputies Renaissance (ex-LREM) Aurore Bergé on France 2, noting that “many bet on the inability that we would have to pass this bill”.

“What should be remembered is what it allows, for the French, to protect their purchasing power against the peak of inflation,” she added.

“The left was not at the rendezvous of this text at all since unable to vote for it, even going so far as to vote against”, lamented the deputy for Yvelines, denouncing her “irresponsibility”.
