After a curious final phase with a converted and a missed penalty as well as two expulsions, England's national football team celebrated a successful start in the Nations League. National coach Gareth Southgate's team won 1-0 (0-0) in Iceland thanks to the penalty from Raheem Sterling (90th). Denmark and Belgium will meet in the second game of the group in the evening.

Shortly after Sterling's opening goal, Birkir Bjarnason also had a great chance to equalize from a penalty, but shot over the gate. England's Kyle Walker (70th) and Iceland's Sverrir Ingason (89th) had previously seen the yellow-red card. As expected, England, which started with Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, had significantly more of the game. An early goal from star striker Harry Kane (7th) was not given due to offside. Iceland concentrated with less than 20 percent possession of the ball on the defense, but the Three Lions struggled to create opportunities.
