“Die Spur” is a ZDF documentary show dedicated to the forensic analysis of socio-political issues and events.
Two journalists reconstruct stories and grievances, track down those responsible and draw an overall picture with the aim of leaving no questions unanswered. You research with all available means: investigative, data-driven and digital. You can also stream entire episodes of the series in the ZDF media library.

Antonio Russo leaves his restaurant late at night with the last four employees. Suddenly, two people with submachine guns appear and open fire. The experienced SOKO chief investigator Ingo Thiel is immediately ordered to the bloody crime scene, because it quickly becomes clear that the cold-blooded murder attempt is connected to the ‘Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia.
Thiel immediately sets up a special commission – but none of them is a mafia expert. Interpol is therefore providing them with support from the Italian special investigator Carla Orlando. With their help, the picture quickly becomes clearer: the murdered innkeeper was the son of Luigi Russo, the head of the Russo clan from San Vitale in Calabria. 15 years ago he went into hiding while fleeing the authorities. While examining Antonio Russo’s shot-up car, Thiel’s colleagues make a mysterious discovery: the car is completely bugged… Through DNA traces, the investigators find out that the two suspects they are looking for are related – and part of a feud between the warring mafia clans Russo and Costa. In Calabria, this family dispute has already resulted in more than a hundred deaths!
A successful investigation can finally be recorded in Germany: The first perpetrator is convicted by Thiel and Carla. Since the help from Italy is sparse and Thiel still hasn’t found out anything about the professional eavesdropping on the victims’ cars, he flies to Calabria with Carla. There they hope to get support from the public prosecutor and notorious mafia hunter Silvio Bertone in order to catch the second, still fugitive, perpetrator.
But Carla has an even higher personal goal: she wants to finally find Luigi Russo, the head of the Russo clan in hiding and her father’s murderer, and hold her father responsible for his countless crimes…
