LONDON (Reuters) – The British government declared a state of drought in parts of southern, central and eastern England on Friday after several heatwaves.

England had its driest July since 1935, with rainfall just 35% of its usual average.

Several parts of England and Wales are currently on four-day red alert for “extreme heat”.

With the approval of the government, which will invite individuals and companies to use water moderately, the water companies of the regions concerned will be able to put in place restrictive measures in order to safeguard the resources.

The last drought in England was in 2018.
