The streets become a take-away

Hobby chefs and professionals alike offer their favorite dishes in sample portions right on their doorstep in Zurich. This is what you need to know about the first street food tour.

Vegan tacos, fish crisps or ice cream sandwiches: on Saturday, Zurich residents can “feast” through the streets of the Zwingli town. All this takes place as part of the first Street Food Tour.

Right outside the front door, around 40 hobby cooks and professionals offer their favorite dishes in sample portions from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Everyone was allowed to register for stands. Participation is free for both chefs and visitors.

But the chefs in particular have to pay attention to a few points: No alcohol may be sold and no loud music may be played. Seats may not be offered either. In addition, the stand operators must contact the Canton food regulations keep. All stands that deviate from these points require explicit approval from the city or canton.

It’s easier for visitors. For a maximum of CHF 19 per portion, anyone who wants to can “try” their way through the city. So that the people of Zurich can find their way around, the city experts of the newsletter Ron Orp on a map collected all food stands.

The largest urban online network in Switzerland

But who is this Ron Orp who is organizing a food parade in the city of Zurich and inviting people to dance on the city’s roof terraces?

In 2004, Christian Klinner and Romano Strebel founded Ron Orp, which is now the largest urban online network in Switzerland. The basic idea was to inform the city population about what’s going on in the city away from the big event venues and concert halls.

120,000 people in Zurich – more than one in four residents – have now subscribed to the newsletter. However, women from Basel, Lucerne and Geneva have long been looking for jobs, an apartment or love on the associated internet platform. Today the company employs around 40 people across Switzerland, 18 of them in Zurich.
