Salto customers can still view content from the French-style SVOD service, but no one can subscribe to it anymore. The message sent is clear: the broadcast will cease in a month at most. This is the end clap for the streaming platform set up by France Télévisions, TF1 and M6.

Thank you to all Salto subscribers for sharing with us their desire and enthusiasm for a streaming platform made in France”. After two of its main shareholders, M6 and TF1, withdrew from the projectwe no longer gave much of the skin of “French Netflix”, and it seems that the movement is accelerating even faster than expected.

Salto will not have had time to reach one million subscribers, since it is rumored that the service will still have succeeded in convincing nearly 900,000 faithful. The account will unfortunately remain blocked at this figure, since the last owner of the service, France Télévisions, has not succeeded in finding a buyer, which means the cessation of activity. In a saturated streaming industry where even Disney+ is losing millions of subscribers, Salto’s task proved almost insurmountable.

Salto no longer takes new subscribers, the end is very near

According to observers, since its launch in October 2020, the platform has accumulated more than €200 million in debt. Suffice to say that competing head-on with Netflix, Prime Video and other Disney+ is proving impossible. As a reminder, Netflix has 10 times the number of subscribers in France and has a budget of $17 billion when the French “little thumb” only has 135 million €.

Salto wanted to be the portal for French television and film production. This is what made its strength of proposal as much as its weakness. By refusing for too long to diversify its offer, the service has not been able to upset the consumption habits of the French who flocked to competing services from the start of the COVID-19 epidemic, in March 2020.
