The Swiss make Letzigrund a madhouse

At the finals of the Diamond League in Zurich, the world stars sometimes show outstanding performances. But it’s the locals who create the best atmosphere. This underlines how important Swiss top athletes are for the best athletics meeting in the world.

If the prize money at the final of the Diamond League had been awarded according to the applause meter, the Swiss would have cashed in big in the Letzigrund. Olympic champions and world record holders were at the start, but it never got as loud in the stadium as when locals were presenting. For five of them it was something like a second medal celebration: they had won medals at the European Championships in Munich in August and were now being cheered on by the 25,000 people in the Letzigrund. The emotional highlight was the women’s 200-meter run with the European champion Mujinga Kambundji.
