This means that Nintendo has, in less than 5 years, installed as many Switches in France as Sony has sold PS4s in the space of 8 years, which also corresponds to the total sales of the Wii in its time. It would thus have sold 1.23 million Switch in 2021, which represents a decline of 15% compared to the record of 2020 (1.44 million) while remaining at the level of 2019. Oscar Lemaire recalls that the most sold on French territory remains the Nintendo DS with close to 12 million laptops sold.
On the side of the new generation consoles, the battle is unfortunately far from being as explosive as it should be, the fault obviously with a largely insufficient supply. For the year 2021, we are talking about 600,000 PS5 and 214,000 Xbox Series sold, for a respective total of 765,000 and 300,000 consoles installed in France by Sony and Microsoft, i.e. a volume significantly lower than that of PS4 and Xbox One at the same stage (1.1 million and 416,000, respectively). Let us add that 90,000 PS4s were sold last year in France and that it will be interesting, in view of certain recent echoes, to see if the figure for the year 2022 will be a little higher.
When the S becomes stronger than the X
Other interesting information from Oscar Lemaire, the standard model of PlayStation 5, the one sold for 500 euros with its disc player, is still largely in the majority and represents more than 85% of the platform’s sales. On the other hand, Microsoft’s strategy to market a version light of its new generation console has become an unexpected asset in these times of prolonged shortage. Obviously simpler to produce, the Xbox Series S is taking the best of the Xbox Series X and ultimately accounts for just over 50% of Xbox Series family sales. What was this business with the teraflops?
