the taboo of homosexuality in a conformist society

The opinion of the “World” – To see

Father of a family and taxi driver on the verge of retirement, Pak regularly attends gay dating places in Hong Kong. A one-night stand, the one with Hoi, divorced and retired, turns into a real love affair. How to live a relationship whose nature is still the subject of a taboo in a gently conformist society, sensitive however, we understand, to the growing need to take into account sexual differences? How do you maintain such a relationship while hiding it from your own family?

Spring in Hong Kong feeds his story with a suspense that will never turn into cathartic revelation. It is a half-hearted film which touches on several subjects at the same time, lingers on the loneliness resulting from belonging to a sexual minority as well as from aging. We will thus be grateful to Ray Yeung, filmmaker of whom this is the third feature film and who admits to defining himself as an LGBT director, for treating a scenario a little starched by sociology and a certain voluntarism with a certain finesse, helped in this by the conviction of its actors.

Chinese film (Hong Kong) by Ray Yeung. With Tai Bo, Ben Yuen, Patra Au (1 h 32.)
