Members of the Insider Program discovered an interesting little change in Windows 11. The taskbar gains a VPN indicator.
For several years, the use of VPNs has been democratized among the general public. You must have seen an advertisement for one of these services in an online media or in financing a video on YouTube or Twitch.
Faced with this increase in the use of VPNs, Microsoft has decided to support the movement with a small change for Windows 11.
An indicator to know if you are using a VPN
The change was spotted by the PhantomOcean3 account on Twitter as part of the Windows Insider Program. In build 25247, we can discover a new indicator at the level of the taskbar.
Another neat hidden change in 25247, a minor one – when you are connected using a VPN, there will soon be a small ‘shield’ overlay on the network icon to indicate that. (also, it respects your accent color!)

It simply lets you know if the machine is currently connected through a VPN network or not. To use it, it is essential to use the built-in VPN tools of Windows 11. If you use an application offered by your VPN provider, it will not work.
This is a function clearly in development on which Microsoft has not yet communicated. Its operation could therefore evolve between now and its possible release.
