the tax exemption ceiling rises to 7,500 euros for 2022

MEPs approved on Friday an increase in the overtime tax exemption ceiling for 2022, a measure which gave rise to a lively debate between the left and other groups during the examination of the amending finance bill.

As in committee, the deputies adopted by 180 votes against 53 amendments LREM, Horizons and LR, which raise the tax exemption ceiling for overtime and additional hours worked by employees at 7,500 euros for the year 2022, i.e. between the January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022.

Currently, overtime is tax-exempt up to a ceiling of 5,000 euros per year, with a maximum of 220 hours worked over a year, excluding branch, company or specific collective agreement.

On the right, the LR deputies initially asked for a complete tax exemption for overtime, but a fallback amendment tabled by Vronique Louwagie also proposed raising the ceiling to 7,500 euros.

This measure of purchasing power is also essential for our companies which are unable to recruit at the moment, said MP LR Emilie Bonnivard.

A complete removal of the ceiling is never very good for public finances, explained Jean-Ren Cazaneuve, the budget rapporteur, for whom this increase in the ceiling constitutes a gain in purchasing power for employees and gives flexibility to companies. currently facing recruitment difficulties.

The National Rally supported this measure which highlights the value of work and which is in the interest of the French, explained MP Philippe Ballard.

On the left, on the other hand, the raising of the ceiling provoked strong reactions: What you want is to lower the price of labor, got carried away the LFI president of the Finance Committee of the Assembly Eric Coquerel.

We want wage increases and a minimum wage of 1,500 euros net, said socialist Christine Pires Beaune. Environmentalists, meanwhile, pleaded for a reduction in working time.

The Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire supported the measure, his eyes balanced. It supports the purchasing power of those who work and respects public finances, he explained.
