Expected to enter this market for some time following various presentations at trade shows such as IFA, TCL is finally arriving with its first gaming monitors in France through two references with particularly interesting characteristics.

Named R8, this new series of screens gives pride of place to Mini-LED backlighting, thus benefiting from the manufacturer’s expertise acquired in the television segment in which TCL has shown tremendous growth in recent years.

Two screens that announce a high-flying HDR experience

The two monitors presented today feature so-called QD-Mini-LED panels, as found on many references among the brand’s televisions, like the TCL C805 tested by us recently.

The Chinese manufacturer has thus announced the availability of its TCL 27R83U screen. Equipped with a diagonal of 27 inches for a 4K UHD definition (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) promising a good pixel density, the screen boasts a Fast-HVA panel produced by TCL CSOT, the group’s subsidiary. Although at 160 Hz, its refresh rate remains lower than that of other recent 4K gaming screens, the 27R83U stands out for its VESA DisplayHDR 1400 certification, which is still rarely seen on monitors.

This first implies that the monitor is capable of peaking at or above 1400 cd/m2 (on small areas such as full screen), but also and among other things that it can display a maximum black luminance of 0.02 cd/m2. The criteria of precision and colorimetric coverage also come into account. On this point, TCL announces Pantone certification with 95% coverage of DCI-P3, and 97% of the Adobe RGB space, all with a Delta E of less than 2 for the three main color spaces.

The screen should also offer a qualitative experience regarding blooming, since it boasts 1,152 local dimming zones, something that we will nevertheless have to verify in a test in real conditions. In terms of performance and features, TCL mentions a response time of 1 ms GtG, support for AMD FreeSync Premium and G-Sync technologies (compatible), as well as the presence of a USB-C port with PowerDelivery up to 90 W, a KVM switch… and a hint of RGB on the back of the two screens!

The second screen, the TCL 34R83Q, has all the advantages of the one presented above, with the difference that it has a diagonal of 34 inches with a radius of curvature of 1500R, all with a WQHD definition (3,440 x 1 440 pixels). Like its little brother, it announces itself with a light peak of 1,400 cd/m2 and 1,152 local dimming zones too. In the game of differences, the refresh rate is significantly higher on this 34R83Q, which goes up to 170 Hz.

Price and availability of TCL R8 screens

Currently, the TCL 34R83Q is already available for 1,199 euros at most retailers. However, you will still have to be patient for the TCL 27R83U, which will undoubtedly arrive in the following weeks. Its selling price should be between 1,000 and 1,100 euros.
