Meta gave more information about the Meta Connect 2023, which will start on September 27 and will last for two days. The event should mainly focus on the Meta Quest 3, as evidenced by a teaser video published by the firm of Mark Zuckerberg.

The Meta Connect conference is often the scene of major announcements for Meta. Last year, the company presented its Meta Quest Pro headset there. The Horizon Worlds virtual platform, the first iteration of the company’s metaverse, was unveiled during the 2021 edition.

An event that will focus on the Meta Quest 3

If Meta took care to unveil the Meta Quest 3 just before Apple’s WWDC last June, Meta Connect will be an opportunity to present the virtual reality headset in much more detail, which will be 40% thinner than its predecessor. .

The teaser thus highlights the three sensors on the front of the device. They are rumored to consist of two color cameras for real-world perception, as well as an infrared projector to map the environment. Unlike the Meta Quest 2 which offers a black and white view of the environment, this model will display these images in color.

The redesigned Touch Plus controllers are also featured in the video. They should be more comfortable than the current version, in addition to offering much better haptic feedback.

But not only

On its official event page, Meta promises a broader presentation in the areas of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality. It seems obvious that in addition to sharing the technical details of its new headset, the company will give an overview of the mixed reality applications and experiences that will be possible with it.

Meta will have to go all out on this point: it will have to attract consumers to buy its new device while the VR headset sector is going through a difficult period. Similarly, its Horizon Worlds platform is struggling to convince, but many improvements should be presented during Meta Connect. The firm, for example, revealed that it has created a dedicated studio for editing games in Horizon Worlds.

As a reminder, Meta’s Reality Labs division, which handles everything related to VR and augmented reality, has racked up $21 billion in losses over the past 18 months.

Meta Quest 2

  • Well-designed helmet suitable for spectacle wearers
  • Easy to setup
  • Freedom of a wireless headset

At Clubic, the concept of virtual reality has seduced us since the mid-90s with the release of helmets such as the Forte VFX1. We are delighted to see the progress made by both manufacturers and developers and the release, a few months ago, ofHalf-Life Alyx was a strong signal: if some still doubted it, Valve proved that video games could take advantage of virtual reality to offer remarkable experiences.

Today, Oculus pushes the point a little further with an excellent helmet even if it involves having a Facebook account. Apart from this pitfall, there are other ways to progress. In particular, we can hope that the weight is further reduced or that the autonomy is still evolving in the right direction. We also regret certain “ergonomic” sacrifices (lens spacing, strap) made to reduce the cost of the helmet. The fact remains that at less than 350 euros, Oculus distributes a product of excellent quality which more than tickles models twice as expensive. The image quality is remarkable, the audio reproduction convincing and the whole benefits from top-notch ergonomics.

If now Oculus could make an effort to integrate some of the accessories and no longer offer them as options, that would be (almost) perfect. VR is getting a little more compelling with each passing day.
