Google is not done releasing phones. While the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have entered the marketing phase for a few weeks, and a Pixel Fold is starting to be talked about, it is yet another device that is subject to rumors this week: the Pixel 7a.
Clues in the Android source code
Google’s mid-range mobile, whose name had already appeared on Amazon not long ago, has seen its spec sheet supposedly spread out on the web. Kuba Wojciechowski, a Polish developer turned professional in the art of delving into Android source code, was able to unearth some interesting technical features concerning the one that Google still calls the code name “Lynx”.
Within the drivers of the photo application, it is indeed possible to find a piece of code mentioning a photographic arrangement specific to “Pixel 22 Mid-range” (Pixel 22 mid-range, in good French). With the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro drivers inheriting the “¨Pixel 22 Premium” qualification, the relationship leaves little room for doubt. The 7a would therefore be equipped with a 64 Mpx main photo sensor (Sony’s IMX787 to be precise) and a 13 Mpx ultra-wide-angle sensor (the IMX712).
An aggressive mid-range
That’s not all. The 7a will be a priori also equipped with the Google Tensor G2 chip already found in the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. The mobile should also be compatible with wireless charging and would arrive with a 1080p Oled Samsung screen capable of displaying at a refresh rate of 90 Hz. Lots of small improvements that would make this Pixel 7a a worthy successor to the Pixel 6a and even a fierce competitor to the Pixel 7.
There is still one big unknown: the price. Google’s A range has always taken care to display very competitive prices in view of the on-board components. If Google still manages to offer a price below 500 €, the Pixel 7a could well display an unbeatable price / quality ratio. Google’s ability to absorb the costs of inflation, as with the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, allows for some optimism on this point. The company does not have much choice anyway since it hopes to sell at least 4 million units of this Pixel 7a.
