She was 11 and her whole life ahead of her. Evaëlle Dupuis, a young schoolgirl from Val-d’Oise, committed suicide on June 21, 2019, just before the summer vacation, at home hanging from the bars of her bed. The drop of too much was yet another argument with a comrade. At that time, the young teenager, in 6th grade, was very fragile. She had just changed college, because for several months she had been subjected to academic harassment by her classmates but also by her French teacher, she had confided to her parents a few months earlier. Mockery, humiliation, insults and physical attacks punctuated his daily life.

A judicial investigation was opened in 2020. And against all expectations, three 13-year-old teenagers and a teacher were indicted. A first in the history of National Education. The professor was placed under judicial supervision with a ban on teaching and compulsory psychological care.

Little Evaëlle’s descent into hell

The story would be part of a fact that could not be more banal, a simple ankle injury that occurred at the start of the 2018 school year. Disabled to carry her things, little Evaëlle then uses a single binder for all her lessons. Unfortunately, a teacher does not take this favorably. She multiplies the words in the liaison book to express her dissatisfaction. The beginning of the ordeal begins, for Evaëlle diagnosed early, with a “need to be loved even excessively”, according to her relatives. “She takes a lot in French, she often ends up in tears”, entrust two comrades to the parents of the teenager.

Little by little, she finds herself alone in class, at recess and in the canteen. She is singled out by a dozen students who laugh at her, insult her and hit her, “They put chiquettes behind his head”, reports the JDD. This situation made him suffer terribly. In her diary she describes herself as an “SA”, one without friends. In December 2018, the young girl tried to set her home on fire to end her life, she explained to her parents.

The management of the school is alerted. To resolve conflicts between students, the principal promises Evaëlle’s parents “To use the Pikas method, which aims, without blaming the ‘negative leaders’, to transform them into ‘positive leaders’”, relate our colleagues from the JDD. No result. The situation is getting worse. One day in French class, her teacher organized a debate on Evaëlle in front of her, “Why it is excluded” tells the schoolgirl to the police during her first complaint. Everyone has their own commentary. It was the “Worst day of his life”.

A tragedy that could have been avoided

According to the research of the Journal du Dimanche, the drama could have been avoided. An administrative investigation points to “Errors of appreciation on the real suffering of this young girl”. In addition, in a letter dated July 2020, the Academy of Versailles notes that “Accompanying measures […] were not sufficient to avoid [le] acting out”.

By harassing this young girl, the teacher sent a signal. The children only took over “, accuses Delphine Meillet, the lawyer of the Dupuis family. The lack of vigilance seems undeniable. What role did each play? The legal proceedings will tell.
