The Tesla Model Y surpasses any car with this new world record

After being the best-selling car in Europe in the 1st quarter, all engines combined, the Tesla Model Y also topped the world rankings over the same period. A great success for the brand, with more than 267,000 copies sold. This makes it the first electric car to take first place in the ranking, ahead of petrol cars.

It seems that nothing can now stop Tesla, which has been surfing on success for a few months. Elon Musk’s firm, which could have a difficult year due to Chinese competition, does not seem to be more disturbed than that for the moment.

An incredible performance

Admittedly, new players are developing, such as Nio or BYD, the world’s second largest electric company behind Tesla. But the American manufacturer still has a good head start. And it seems to be constantly increasing, as the records are linked. And the latest is historic, both for the brand and for the entire automotive industry. This is what the site reports Motor1relaying information from specialist Jato.

The latter has just published a ranking of the five best-selling cars in the world throughout the first quarter. If Toyota occupies four places with its Corolla, Hilux, Rav4 and Camry, the top step of the podium goes to Tesla. And more specifically to the Model Y, with no less than 267,200 copies sold since January.

A record for the manufacturer, which had already placed its electric SUV in first place in the ranking of the best-selling cars in Europe in the 1st quarter of 2023, all engines combined. The star of the brand was then far ahead of the Model 3 as well as its main rivals, including the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, as well as the Dacia Spring, which recently enriched its range with a new version.

That’s not all, because Tesla also managed the feat of placing two cars in the top 500 best-selling models worldwide in 2022. The Model Y arrived on the 3rd step of the podium with 747,500 copies during that the Model 3 was placed in 10th position with 482,200 units sold, both in the United States and in Europe and China.

An unstoppable bulldozer

Incredible figures, after the manufacturer has already broken a historic record in 2022 by having sold more than a million cars worldwide. At the beginning of the year, he was already showing very encouraging results and announced that he had reached his goal of having produced 5,000 copies of his SUV in one week within his Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany.

In 2022, Model Y sales soared 91%, while those of the Model 3 fell slightly by 3%. Indeed, for a few months the SUV was cheaper than the latter, an asset which adds to the fact that customers are very fond of raised models anyway. We can also see that the ranking is mainly made up of them.

Tesla Model Y

But what explains the rapid rise of the brand, while its situation was very worrying a few months earlier? The first reason is the arrival of theInflation Reduction Act in the United States, which allows customers buying a Tesla to benefit from a tax credit of 7,500 dollars. The latter was implemented from January 1, which accelerated sales. Several price reductions have also been madeespecially in January and April.

Today, the Model Y and Model 3 are among the cheapest electric cars on the market, respectively displayed at 45,990 and 41,990 euros. Enough to compete head-on with the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric, which starts from 42,000 euros. But it may be that the Tesla sedan can no longer benefit from the bonus, unless Elon Musk chooses to set up a Gigafactory in France…
