The 3 half-price box sets that are essential if you like cinema
John Wick box set
The safe John Wick includes all four films in the saga. It is available at the price of €17.50 on DVD, and at the price of €25 on Blu-ray. Without being the most subtle films in this short selection, the four episodes, directed by Chad Stahelski, are nevertheless worth seeing. After a rather wise first film, which introduces the eponymous character played by Keanu Reeves, the saga finds its identity in the second part, and will not let go until the very last film. Uneven, sometimes messy, sometimes stupid, John Wick is a nevertheless generous saga which draws its inspiration from Asian castagne films. A guilty pleasure with some truly good pieces of cinema, which it would be a shame to ignore.
Kore-Eda Box
The Kore-Eda Hirokazu DVD box set includes six films, and is priced at €20. Kore-Eda is one of the best-known Japanese directors in the West, and also one of the most exciting. By starting his career in documentaries for Japanese channels, he was able to refine his view of humanity, and subsequently offer accurate and profound works, well anchored in Japanese society. Apart from The Third Murder, a shaky but interesting thriller, the other films in this box set are touching, intimate stories. This box set is a great gateway to discovering the director’s works. Special mention for Like father, like son And I Wish, two films about parenthood and childhood, where the harshness of the adult world confronts the innocent gaze of the youngest.
Animation box
The Grandiose Nature box set includes animated films The Summit of the Gods And The Red Turtle on Blu-ray. It is priced at €9.99. The Summit of the Gods is an adaptation of the manga of the same name by Jirô Taniguchi. Directed by Patrick Imbert, the film realistically transcribes the merciless world of mountaineering, through the prism of two men facing nature and themselves. A visceral film that speaks as much about the mountain as it does about obsession.
The Red Turtle is a film by Michael Dudok de Wit, produced by Studio Ghibli, the studio to which we owe, among others, the films of Hayao Miyazaki. The film tells the story of a shipwrecked man on a desolate desert island, who will try by all means to survive, until his encounter with a red turtle. Film devoid of dialogue, where emotions are conveyed through (sublime) images and music, The Red Turtle is a masterpiece of poetry and a powerful reflection on life and the passing of time.
