The Three Milady Musketeers by Martin Bourboulon is announced in our theaters on December 13, 2023. While waiting for this sequel, here is what you need to know. If you missed it, the first part has just arrived on DVD and VOD.
Released in our theaters on April 5, The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan is one of the greatest successes of French cinema this year: at the time of writing, it is the 3rd French film at the box- office, behind Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire, and Alibi.com 2.
The film directed by Martin Bourboulon totaled 3.3 million admissions. It is the 7th biggest success of 2023, ahead of Indiana Jones 5, and behind Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It could garner additional viewers in theaters when the sequel is released. Pathé plans, in fact, to reschedule the first part when the second is released.
Release date: When is the Three Musketeers sequel coming out?
The Three Musketeers sequel, titled The Three Musketeers: Milady, will be released on December 13, 2023, 7 months after D’Artagnan.
guest of the issue of our colleagues from Boxoffice ProArdavan Safaee, president of Pathé, also gave some clarifications on this strategy of spacing out the release between the two films.
“We asked ourselves the question of how we can sequence the films today so that the second one does not have fewer admissions. When we go to see a film at the cinema, the basis of the public who will go to see the second film is necessarily those who have seen the first and no one else. So unlike the two parts of Mesrine, released a month apart (October and November 2008, Ed.)we decided to wait for the exploitation of The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan in the cinema, on VOD and on television, on a pay channel 6 months after the release.
And to add:As a result, we will perhaps have broadened the base of spectators and we will launch into the promotion of the second film, or even bring out D’Artagnan over a few days. For us it is necessary to have a second operating life of the first part before releasing the sequel.“
Has the Three Musketeers sequel already been filmed?
The sequel is already shot. It was filmed in the continuity of the first. “[Ce diptyque] is a unique experience. We shot everything at the same time. It’s like a big 4 hour movie. It’s extraordinary. We are propelled into a story, with characters, issues. It’s extremely rich, every day, building this building little by little“, has explained Martin Bourboulon at our microphone.
He pursues : “It is a project that has always been designed in two parts. It’s really the starting point we had with the producers and the authors, for the public, for the show, to live up to the adventure we want to offer..
We want to offer this film in two parts. We also want the cinema, somewhere, to take back, why not, the appointments that it has the right to set with the spectators, in the same way as certain television series. It was very definite in our mind.”
Last March, a few days before the film’s release, Martin Bourboulon told us that he was working on all the finishing touches. “The sound, the image, the special effects are not finished. I would not have been ready to release the film [en avril 2023]. This is played between three months later, or a little later. It seemed to us that offering the sequel in December was what we wanted, and it’s not that long. It may give time to review the first one. It’s a trade-off that was made quite early.”
What to expect from this sequel?
Like a series episode, the end of the first part ends on a cliffhanger, and like a superhero blockbuster, the film even offers us a bonus scene during the credits! Remember to stay during the credits!

The scene in question shows us a discussion between Milady and Richelieu. The latter asks the Cardinal to get rid of the Musketeers…
Centered on the character embodied by Eva Green, the film will pick up where D’Artagnan left off and focus on the story of Milady: from her past to her future and her schemes with Cardinal de Richelieu (Eric Ruf).
Met on the occasion of the promotion of the first part, we asked Eva Green if she could give us some clues about the sequel. Here is the little teaser she gave us, in order to avoid spoilers as much as possible!
“This film was shot in two parts, and it’s really in the second part that we explore more my character of Milady, who is much more virile, much more warlike. There are real fight scenes. I had to train a lot beforehand. There are absolutely extraordinary stuntmen. I love roles that are a bit physical like that, and it helps me to find the interiority of the character. These are quite difficult roles. Obviously, I’m not used to fencing or aikido. It was a real pleasure, a real luxury.“
In the second part, we really understand why Milady became Milady.
“My goal was to bring humanity to the charactershe continues. In the first part, she remains quite mysterious and dangerous, but in the second part, we really understand why Milady became Milady. Why she became this ruthless woman. I really enjoyed this challenge.“
And to conclude:I must not reveal too much, I must remain very mysterious on this 2nd part. The writers decided to explore the achilles heel. I found that very interesting; that’s what I like about this character. There are cracks behind.”
