Do you remember Monica Poli? You know that 57-year-old Italian girl who went after pickpockets in the streets of Venice and whose videos probably livened up your vacation? If this woman is known today for her now famous phrase ” Attention Pickpockets she proclaims loud and clear, she has been leading a real fight against thefts in the streets of her city for more than thirty years, alongside about fifty other people. The “Cittadini Non Distratti” collective, of which Monica is a member, is said to have been responsible for a third of pickpocket arrests in Venice in 2019 (according to The Economist).

When the pickpocket hunter has her phone stolen…
With her straw hat and her carrying voice, Monica does not go unnoticed in the city of the Doges. If this presence and this reputation have many advantages to deter thieves, it can unfortunately make some of them want to put their hands directly in the pockets of our pickpocket hunter. This is unfortunately what happened a few days ago, when Mathieu Hennequin was filming alongside Monica for The Parisian.
In the video above, we can notice that a young man dressed in a red T-shirt followed the journalist and the pickpocket hunter for about fifteen minutes. The thief then waited for the right opportunity to get closer to Monica, in order to discreetly steal her phone. Victim of what she has been fighting for many years, the Italian has therefore lodged a complaint with the police station. Fortunately, his phone was found a few days later.
The Parisian questioned the police about the actions of the Cittadini Non Distratti group. If the police salute the awareness-raising effort, they nevertheless consider that it is a job that belongs to the State. The solution would then be to increase the number of patrols in the field while relieving the police of bureaucratic taskss”, reports Mathieu Hennequin. Either way, Monica’s action is commendable, and far more interesting to follow on TikTok than some stupid and deadly trending.
