the top 5 offers, one month after the abolition of the regulated tariff

The regulated gas tariff disappeared on 1 July. A month later, what are the most interesting offers for consumers? MoneyVox presents its top 5.

I am confident, because I believe that we have explained to the consumer what will happen from July 1. (…) We expect offers, because for suppliers the end of TRV is a marketing opportunity, explained the president of the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE), Emmanuelle Wargon, in an interview with MoneyVox at the end of June, just before the abolition of the regulated gas sales tariff (TRVG). A month later, what are the offers offered to consumers and, in particular, the 2.3 million customers who were still under a TRV contract with Engie and who have automatically switched to Passerelle?

Precisely, to support households, the CRE has published since June a price quote – on which Engie has aligned for Passerelle – in order to choose the best possible contract. Like a reference rent, this rate aims to avoid excessively high offers. This indicative price is intended to serve as a compass for consumers who wish to compare supply offers from June 2023, explains CRE.

For the month of August, the price represented was the following: 0.08406 euro per KWh in heating and 0.10700 per KWh in hot water and cooking for a subscription of 102.94 euros and 257.18 euros respectively per year. To establish its top 5 of the best offers on the market, MoneyVox has chosen to use CRE’s standard profiles and pass them to the comparator of the energy mediator:

  • a typical customer at the Base d’Engie regulated tariff with an annual consumption of 750 kWh (cooking use),
  • a typical customer at tariff B1 (level 2) with an annual consumption of 17,000 kWh (heating use).

The table above shows us that on the 25 contract offers proposed in total for a small gas consumer, only four offer a price lower than the reference price with a maximum annual gain of 10 euros, i.e. less than 1 euro per month. Moreover, these offers are variable and will see their prices change each month.

TotalEnergies with its Gas offer promises a 10% discount on the kilowatt hour for one year, based on the price quoted from CRE. However, the discount does not apply to the subscription, nor to taxes, which constitute nearly 70% of the total amount paid each month on the invoice.

Is the fixed price the solution?

Only the Zen 1 year offer from Alterna draws its pin from the game with a price blocked and therefore guaranteed for the next 12 months. Subscribing to a fixed price market offer allows you to freeze your gas budget at a relatively moderate level. And therefore not to suffer a possible new increase during next winter, specifies Julien Tedd, co-founder of the broker Opera Energie.

Finally, the Gaz de Bordeaux offer appears in this top 5, for one euro more than the listed price. But the case of the Gironde capital is specific: as in twenty areas in France, gas is the preserve of an ELD for local distribution companies (ELD). A situation that limits competition, regrets the mediator of energy.

When consumption increases, the offers change. Thus 8 offers offer a more attractive price than that recommended by CRE. Ohm nergie and its annual bill of 1497 euros per year occupies first place in the Top 5 with a subscription price equivalent to that of the price quoted.

Engie’s Passerelle offer does not appear in the energy mediator’s comparator, regardless of the household’s level of consumption.
