The Toyota Prius is back for a version 5, in plug-in hybrid only

Toyota presents the 5th generation of its Prius. The previous 1.8 gasoline engine known as simple hybrid, or self-charging, has been abandoned in favor of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a 148 hp internal combustion engine associated with a 160 hp electric motor, the whole developing cumulative 223 hp, against 122 hp previously.

Above all, the autonomy announced by the manufacturer in all-electric is 80 km, thanks to a new 13.6 kWh battery which will however have to be recharged on a socket to make the additional cost linked to this technology profitable. Toyota further announces that “renewable energy can also be produced via solar panels located on the roof, depending on the finishes“. A statement to be confirmed in a test.

Without providing figures, Toyota assures that the new Prius will offer an exciting drive, in particular thanks to a lower center of gravity due to a new implementation of the battery, which passes under the rear seat. Additionally, this 5th iteration of the Prius is built on the lighter and stiffer second-generation GA-C platform.

The design also evolves, with more refined lines and a slender silhouette with a more modern appearance. The height of the car was lowered by 50mm by moving the peak of the roof rearward and adopting larger diameter tires, up to 19 inches. The wheelbase increases by 50 mm compared to the previous generation, thus auguring a slightly improved habitability, despite an overall length reduced by 46 mm.

The cabin offers a more streamlined design with a 7-inch TFT screen placed at eye level in a horizontal position. Good news, the air conditioning controls and other comfort functions remain physical.

The price is not yet communicated, but the new Prius should be available in the spring of 2023.
