On November 21, France 2 broadcast the TV movie The Last Queen of Tahiti. A story inspired by the fate of a historical figure: that of Pōmare IV.

The end of a dynasty. On November 21, France Télévisions will broadcast its 90-minute TV movie entitled The Last Queen of Tahiti. Already broadcast in September on Polynésie La Première, the TV movie, directed by Adeline Darraux, was shot at the start of the year on the islands of Moorea and Ra’iatea. In project since July 2021, the film tells the true story of Pomare IVlast sovereign of the Pōmare dynasty, royal family of Tahiti for almost a hundred years.

Originally, the one whose birth name was Aimata was not supposed to ascend to the throne. Daughter of King Pōmare II’s first union, Aimata Pōmare IV Vahine-o-Punuateraʻitua is second in line of succession, behind her half-brother Teriʻitaria Pōmare. He becomes king when their father dies when he is only one year old. At the age of 6, he died of dysentery and his sister ascended the throne. Throughout his reign, Pōmare IV struggled against the influence of British missionaries and later French settlers to protect Tahitian beliefs and customs.

The TV movie on the reign of the Queen of Tahiti

In 1844, the queen was forced into exile after the annexation of the Kingdom of Pomare declared by Admiral Du Petit-Thouars. Upon her return, the Queen agrees to sign an agreement which greatly reduced his powers. She will eventually die of a heart attack at the age of 64 after more than fifty years of reign, earning her the nickname “Queen Victoria of the South Seas”. After his death in 1877, his son Pōmare V ruled for three years before abdicating and consenting to the annexation of the kingdom by the French Republicthus ending the ruling Pōmare dynasty.

In The Last Queen of Tahiti, the story of Pōmare IV, played by Tuheï Adams, will be told from his exile. She will take advantage of her crossing to Raiatea in the Leeward Islands to remember the beginnings of his reign, when she was only ten years old. Alongside Tuheï Adams, also appear in the cast: Bernard Le Coq, Alexia Barlier, Terence Telle, Thierry Godard, Eddy Kelly, Teiva Manoi, Lee Rurua and Sam Chemoul.
