the treatment of household waste costs you more and more

A survey by UFC Que Choisir shows that the household waste removal tax (TEOM) increased by 6% between 2020 and 2022. It is difficult to know the exact causes of this increase, especially since numerous disparities exist depending on the territory.

More waste, and an increasingly dirty bill. According to a UFC Que Choisir survey, the amount of the household waste removal tax (TEOM) calculated per inhabitant increased by 6% between 2020 and 2022, going from 118 to 125 euros per year.

For its part, the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) estimated in figures revealed on March 12 that the household waste removal tax had brought in nearly 8.6 billion euros to French municipalities and intercommunalities in 2023compared to 7.9 billion in 2022, an 8% increase, and 7.5 billion in 2021.

Property tax, household waste… These local taxes soar when the housing tax declines

A situation that affects 58 million French people who live in a local community using TEOM to manage waste. But not all taxpayers are in the same boat. The average amount of tax per inhabitant thus varies from around sixty euros to more than 200 euros in the most expensive municipalities. This is the case for example Marseille (217euros) versus Brest (63euros).

From 63,215 euros depending on the city

A interactive map proposed by UFC Que Choisir allows you to compare your household waste tax depending on your city. So, Rennes, the TEOM levied in 2022 is lower than the reference average, 97 euros per inhabitant. Paris, on the other hand, is much superior. In the 1st arrondissement of Paris, taxpayers had to pay 215 euros annually.

How to explain this increase? Difficult to say. Yes, still according to UFC Que Choisir, each resident throws away 561 kg of trash per yeara figure increasing by 20 kg over 1 year, the TEOM is set based on the cadastral rental value of housing, and not with the volume of waste produced by a household, unlike the household waste removal fee.

For managers, these increases can be explained by several reasons, including new treatment methods consistent with the environmental objectives of the Agec law, increases in the price of energy and even fuel. But again, everything actually depends on where you live. If the collection and disposal of a tonne of waste costs 244 euros on average in 2022, the differences in management costs range from 163 euros per tonne of waste to 300 euros for the most expensive municipalities.
