The truth if I lie ! : which actors almost played the main role instead of Richard Anconina?

Released in cinemas in 1997, the cult movie The truth if I lie !worn by Richard Anconina, José Garcia, Bruno Solo, Gilbert Melki, Vincent Elbaz and Élie Kakou, will be rebroadcast on Sunday May 1, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on W9. Directed by Thomas Gilouthis feature film features the character of Édouard Vuibert, nicknamed Eddy,played on screen by Richard Anconina. This young unemployed man walks the streets of Paris in the hope of finding work. While trying to escape from two crooks after having won their game of bonneteau, he comes across Victor Benzakhem, performed by Richard BohringerJewish owner of the American Dream textile warehouse in the Sentier district.

Seeing a necklace representing a Star of David on the ground, Benzakhem hires young man mistakenly thinking he is Jewish, while the necklace belonged to one of the two crooks. Initially a simple handler, Eddie became a salesman and gradually rose through the ranks. He gets closer to the boss’s daughter Sandra, played by Amira Casar. Passing himself off as a Jew to his friends and Sandra, the young man ends up setting up his own business with the help of Dov and Yvan, respectively embodied by Vincent Elbaz and Bruno Solo. For the anecdote, the role of Eddie was originally devolved to Bruno Solo, but the latter was not well enough known to the taste of the producers at the time.

Guillaume Depardieu, soon victim of a motorcycle accident, was approached in his place, then Antoine de Caunes. The latter finally preferred to play in The Divine Pursuit by Michel Deville. The role of Eddie is also proposed to Albert Dupontel when Richard Anconina asks to interpret the character. While he was only offered a simple guest starring role, he got the part. On his side, Gilbert Melki was originally cast as an extra for the film following an announcement made by the production. The actor very quickly asked to meet Thomas Gilou, in order to obtain a more important role. Audacity pays offbecause he was contacted again three days after having passed tests with the casting director.
