The new console crystallizes many debates and beyond the players, it is also the professionals who are enthusiastic, ask questions or even sometimes worry. The PS5 Pro, a console that arrives too soon?

The video game developer community is in deep thought over the unofficial but highly speculated announcement of a PS5 Pro. At this year’s Global Developers Conference (GDC), several developers spoke out about their doubts about the need for a new version of the Sony console, pointing out that they have not yet fully exploited the capabilities of the Standard PS5.

According to GamesIndustry.biz’s Christopher Dring, who shared his thoughts on a recent podcast, there seems to be some reluctance in the industry. Developers surveyed have not yet felt the pressing need to upgrade to an upgraded version of the console, believing that the current generation of games has not yet reached its full potential. This opinion highlights a possible mismatch between Sony’s business strategy and the creative aspirations of game developers.

Too powerful hardware?

Speculation around the technical specifications of the PS5 Pro includes a focus on backward compatibility with the upcoming PS6, as well as the integration of Spectral Super Resolution technology targeting performance in 4K at 120 FPS and 8K at 60 FPS. The GPU is rumored to be a hybrid design between RDNA 3 and RDNA 4.

This is consistent with the words of Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two (publisher of GTA 6), who explained last year that mid-generation upgrades don’t change much and aren’t that significant. Later in the video, this feeling is even more concrete when Christopher Dring says:

I’ll be honest, I haven’t met a single person who understood the point of it. […]

This is not going to grow the market. This is not going to change things.
