The Vampire Diaries: after The Originals and Legacies, a new spin-off in preparation?

While “Legacies” ended last night on the CW after 4 seasons, Julie Plec, the creator of the franchise “The Vampire Diaries” announced that she was working on a new spin-off.

Legacies ended last night on the CW after 4 seasons on the air. A stop which therefore marks the end of the franchise The Vampire Diaries after 13 years of existence. Last May, the American channel had indeed announced the cancellation of the spin-off of The Originals (series itself a spin-off of Vampire Diaries) to the greatest surprise of fans, and of Julie Plec, creator and producer of franchise.

A new spin-off in preparation?

If the fans could have thought that this sudden stop marked the end of an era, it is not so for Julie Plec who does not yet seem ready to say goodbye to the Vampire Diaries universe. The designer has indeed entrusted our colleagues from Deadline that discussions around a new spin-off were currently underway.

It’s gonna happen eventually, that’s all I can tell you“, she thus declared. “There’s nothing written yet, but we’ve had a lot of very interesting and fun conversations about how to launch the franchise into its next phase..”

Julie Plec also added that this new opus “would be part of the franchise’s universal timeline, but would take place in a different setting and with different characters.” Something to delight the fans of the first hour who may soon be able to find their favorite universe on the small screen.

A final marked by comebacks

As announced, the last episode of Legacies was marked by the return of Joseph Morgan, who resumed his role of Klaus Mikaelson in order to deliver a touching message to his daughter Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) but also by the surprise return by Candice King, aka Caroline Forbes in The Vampire Diaries.

Candice’s presence in the episode is the work of Brett Matthews (executive producer of the series, editor’s note)“, said Julie Plec. “Candice, Brett and I have forged a great friendship over the years. We asked him 100 times to come on the show, but as friends we didn’t want to force things. So we waited for the timing to be perfect.”

A half-hearted ending

Julie Plec and Brett Matthews had received the order to write season 4 as if it were the last, even before the announcement of its cancellation. So that had allowed the duo to close the Legacies story in a satisfying way, even if they would have liked to offer more to the fans.

They had even already thought about season 5, which would have included a time jump. “It would have been fun to transport the characters to the real world, outside the school walls,” said Brett Matthews.

We could have seen where they would be in life but also how they would have reconnected with each other. it would have been a good thing for the series, because it could have evolved at the same time as the characters.”

Despite this surprise cancellation, Julie Plec still wanted to thank the CW, which offered her the opportunity to develop the franchise.

There is no doubt that we will return when we can. While I joke about my frustration at seeing the show end before what Brett, I, and the entire team had in mind, we are incredibly grateful to The CW for being the home of this franchise for the past 13 years, under the incredible direction of Mark Pedowitz and his entire team.”

We know they fought to save the show and we’re really, really, really grateful for our journey with them. So while I express my disappointment, I remain very grateful to The CW and Warner Bros.“, she concluded.

Season 4 of Legacies should soon be broadcast in France on SYFY. The 8 seasons of The Vampire Diaries are available on Amazon Prime Video as are the 5 seasons of The Originals.
