What is A Plague Tale: Requiem?

A Plague Tale: Requiem is a video game developed by the Bordeaux studio Asobo. It follows the first opus, A Plague Tale: Innocence, released in 2019. The story takes place some time after the events of the first opus and still follows the duo formed by Amicia and Hugo. The brother and sister go on a new quest on an island in the south of France, with the aim of finding a cure for the evil that is eating away at the young boy.

After the events told in the first game, the characters appear, by force of circumstance, more mature. Like The Last of Us Part II, the relationship to violence and the harshness of the world is at the center of the story. The characters evolve in their quest, weakened by their doubt and faced with their weaknesses. Amicia is caught in a vice, between her role as big sister and her duty to protect her little brother, at all costs. Her torments are reminiscent of those of Senua, the heroine of the game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, as the shift towards madness seems close. Asobo makes his characters endearing and manages to create a deeply human game.

Is A Plague Tale: Requiem worth the price?

A Plague Tale: Requiem just released, so this is a great opportunity to get it. Visually, the art direction is to die for. The magnificent decors are enhanced by exemplary light management. The modeling of the protagonists, from the face to the clothes, is excellent and is accompanied by realistic animations. The acting of the actors is perfect in both original and French version and allows the gallery of characters to be humanized.

Unfortunately, we must not forget that Asobo is a small studio. The work done is incredible, but not without flaws. Collision bugs and slowdowns will be legion during the fifteen hours that the main story lasts. Despite these small problems, the management of the camera is at the top and accompanies a fluid and instinctive gameplay. The game still gets tangled up in somewhat outdated gameplay mechanics at times, but its narrative qualities and enthralling story will reach even the most intransigent gamers.
