The video game Until Dawn soon to be adapted into a film by the director of Shazam

After Uncharted And Gran Turismo, a new Playstation franchise is about to hit the big screen. The horror video game Until Dawn will be entitled to a film adaptation, directed by David F. Sandberg, the director of Shazam And Annabelle 2.

“A love letter to the horror genre”

Released in 2015 on Playstation 4, Until Dawn tells the story of eight friends trapped in a remote mountain cabin in the dead of winter, until they discover they are not alone. In particular, it asked the player to make moral choices, which could have repercussions on the life or death of the characters.

An already very cinematic game with a cast of recognized actors including Hayden Panettière (Scream), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Peter Stormare (Fargo) or even Jordan Fisher (To all the boys I’ve loved), which received excellent reviews and a good public reception.

This new video game adaptation made official by Playstation Productions is written by Gary Dauberman (The Nun, Annabelle), and will therefore be produced by David F. Sandberg. If the project is still very secret, the film is announced as “a terrifying love letter to the horror genre”and will be classified R (i.e. prohibited for unaccompanied under 17s).

The film Until Dawn will be produced by the Screen Gems studio and Playstation Productions, whose boss Asad Qizilbash also shared his excitement with our colleagues at The Hollywood Reporter : “We are thrilled to be working on our first film with Screen Gems. Until Dawn is a fan-favorite PlayStation game, and we can’t wait to bring it to the big screen.”.

Often inexpensive and filled with the promise of thrills, the horror genre has always known how to create an event, and regularly produces great box office successes. The growing popularity of video game adaptations like Super Mario Bros, the movie ($1.4 billion worldwide) also explains Hollywood’s new interest in the video game world.

Additionally, the recent horror video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s was a surprise hit, with nearly 300 million dollars collected worldwide, for a modest budget of 20 million. It is therefore not surprising to see Sony and Playstation Productions wanting to make their prestigious franchises profitable.

Movies Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima And Gravity Rush are also in preparation, as are series God of War And Horizon.

No release date has yet been announced for the film Until Dawnbut The Digitals will obviously keep you informed.
