The mask is again de rigueur in Cuba, in the coastal region of Matanzas. It is not a question of guarding against an epidemic resumption of the Covid-19 but of protecting against the dangers of the thick smoke which escaped from an oil depot on which lightning fell down on the 5 august. A major fire destroyed four of the depot’s eight tanks. The latter supplied a large part of the country with fuel, underlines Daleis Macias, resident of the city of 140,000 inhabitants.
“Everything will become more difficult”, worries Yania Calera, a resident of Matanzas. Even before this major fire, the island was already experiencing regular fuel shortages and power cuts. The thousands of liters of oil lost pose a significant risk to the country’s fragile economy.
