Vivo continues to try to find a place in Europe despite fierce competition from incumbent players and Chinese manufacturers. After a rather attractive Vivo V21, the firm now presents the V23, a mid-range smartphone that intends to stand out from the competition thanks to a serious technical sheet and some originality.

The smartphone does not really look like the V21, which will remain in Vivo’s catalog. It sports a rather elegant angular design which obviously recalls the recent models of the Cupertino company. We were able to see both colors, Sparkle Gold and Starry Black, and the overall impression is very good. As with the recent Realme 9 Pro+, the back of this V23 is able to change color once exposed to UV. The system works well, because we were even able to make a drawing on the back thanks to a layer and a lamp. Only the gold version is affected.

Solid fundamentals

The Vivo V23 opts for a 6.44-inch flat Amoled screen which displays in Full HD + (2400 x 1080 px) and has a refresh rate of 90 Hz. It also accommodates a fingerprint reader. The set works thanks to a SoC Dimensity 920.12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. We can therefore expect good performance in applications as well as in video games.

As far as autonomy is concerned, Vivo has chosen a 4200 mAh battery compatible with FlashCharge technology at 44 W. The manufacturer therefore remains within the sector average, without following Oppo, Realme or Xiaomi in this field. The size of the accumulator may seem a bit limited in 2022, but we will have to see how the firm has optimized everything.

The selfie to stand out

On the back, the smartphone has a triple photo sensor consisting of a 64-megapixel wide-angle, whose lens opens at f / 1.9, an 8 Mpx ultra-wide-angle (f / 2.2) and a 2 MP macro module (f/2.4). A configuration that has become classic on the mid-range for about two years. The firm puts forward an extreme Night Vision mode supposed to bring real added value in the dark.

Vivo takes over the main differentiating element of the V21 for this V23: the camera located on the front. In the article dedicated to that of its predecessor, we could see that the proposal was interesting. The brand has moved upmarket again and this time incorporates a 50 Mpx wide-angle (f / 2) and an 8 Mpx (f / 2.3) UGA accompanied by a dual LED flash for selfies.

This configuration should give the shots a good level of detail, even in difficult conditions thanks to the extra lighting. Vivo also confirmed to us that it was possible to activate it manually on all apps (Snapchat, Instagram, etc.), which was not the case before. Once again, the brand is targeting a young and social media-hungry audience, but it seems to have provided the essentials to make it a solid smartphone on the rest.

Vivo has not yet communicated the exact price of this V23, but we know that it will be around 500 €. When it was released, the V21 cost €419 before quickly dropping. We can therefore see that the brand is moving upmarket. However, the technical sheet seems more ambitious. The smartphone will be available in France from mid-April 2022.
