Flora is undoubtedly one of the gems of the thirteenth season of The Voice. At the age of 16, the teenager impressed Vianney, Zazie, Mika and Bigflo and Oli, with a moving cover of a great classic of French song: The mills of my heart by Michel Legrand. After being praised by the five coaches, who all see her going very far in the adventure, Flora chose to join the team of her idol, Mika.
How did you feel during your blind auditions?
It was a very moving moment for me and also a form of renewal because I already knew the set very well.
You actually participated in The Voice Kids in 2020. Why come back?
Because I want to make a living from music. I wanted to come back to this adventure with more maturity and with more confidence in myself. I have evolved a lot in four years and I felt the difference during the auditions.
Were you less stressed?
It wasn’t the same stress! Having already participated in The Voice put some pressure on me because four years ago, everyone had turned around. I was afraid this wouldn’t be the case in the adult version. It was a real challenge!
You are very young and yet you defended yourself on The mills of my heart, an old French song. Why this choice ?
I wanted to perform a French song that touches the coaches and the viewers. I immediately thought of Mills of my heart. It was also a tribute to my aunt who passed away a few years ago.
Did you have an idea of the coach you wanted to work with before the auditions?
I all liked the five coaches even if they are very different. It’s true that I had a slight preference for Mika but after my performance, he also touched me more than the others.
How are the coaching sessions going with him?
Alright ! Mika works very strictly and I like this rigor. I also appreciate his frankness, everything he says is blunt but fair!
How do your parents view your career?
My parents are very proud of me. They have always supported me because music is part of our culture (editor’s note: Flora’s parents are Sri Lankan). I think they also have some fears because it is a difficult job. But they know that I will never give up!
Are they the ones who passed on this passion for singing to you?
My parents always taught me to listen to lots of different styles of music, whether it was Bollywood or pop. But I really started singing when I was eight, after being bullied at school. It was at that moment that I realized that singing was a refuge but also a wonderful means of expression.
Have you put your studies on hold since your audition?
No, I’m still going to high school! I organize myself between classes and coaching, I go back and forth a lot between the South and Paris. It’s difficult to find a balance but I manage for the moment (Laughs). And I absolutely want to pass my baccalaureate in two years so there is no question of stopping classes. If I cannot develop a musical project, I will study law to become a notary.
