Regularly, the question of whether the ID and the Golf could coexist comes to ring in the ears of Volkswagen. At the Los Angeles Motor Show, Thomas Schafer, CEO of the group, told reporters from the English media Coach : “We have iconic brand names, Golf and GTI. It would be crazy to let them die or forget them. We will remain in the logic of the ID, but the iconic models will have a specific name.“
So that puts an end to the rumours: the Golf will indeed come back in an all-electric version. However, it will not be before its ninth iteration, that is to say on the horizon 2028/2029.
According to Thomas Schafer, ID and Golf will not supplant each other and are meant to coexist. For him, it is not necessary that the designation ID be followed by a number, which could suggest an ID. Golf, just like there is an ID. buzz.
Thomas Schafer clarified that the Golf would therefore not replace the ID 3, the two models being considered as separate cars in terms of size and positioning. Recall, however, that the ID.3 effectively eclipsed the e-Golf, which ceased production in 2020. He also added that “the ID 3 was never a successor to the Golf: it’s more of a Golf Plus.“
Be that as it may, the Golf in its electric version will undoubtedly be between the future ID.2 and the current ID.3, while using a new platform, the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform), which will replace from from 2026 the current MEB platform.
