The vote on the PMA law for all postponed again

The draft law for the PMA for all was to be voted before the summer. The timetable was shaken, and it was decided to postpone the adoption of the text by the Parliament.

The adoption of the PMA law for all was eagerly awaited by single women and couples of women who wish to have a child. The text should allow them to have access to the medically assisted procreation (AMP) to conceive a baby without having to go abroad and, in particular for couples of women, that the child be recognized by civil status. The bioethics bill was to be definitively adopted in April but, due to the health crisis, the parliamentary calendar was shaken up. While some hoped that the text would still be presented before the summer in Parliament, Gilles Le Gendre, boss of the LREM group in the National Assembly announced the postponement this Thursday, May 21 on LCI.

"Before summer it is impossible for two reasons. For a calendar reason: we do not have much time left and we have important texts related to the economic or health emergency situation", justifies Gilles Le Gendre. The second reason is that "the two hemicycles work with reduced staff and therefore for a law as important as all the political forces cannot be present in the hemicycle that poses a real problem of principle", he believes. For the moment, the date of the next postponement of the law has not yet been announced. And according to the president of the LREM group, it will surely have to wait a while. "I hope we can adopt the PMA by the end of the quinquennium", that is to say in 2022, he declares …

The announcement of the postponement of the vote on the bioethics law including the component on PMA for all, Emmanuel Macron's campaign promise in 2017, is far from being pleasant to everyone, both activists and politicians. "I am against the postponement of the examination for second reading of the MAP for all. The bioethics law must be adopted as soon as possible", reacted the LREM deputy for Sarthe, Damien Pichereau, on Twitter. "For many couples and women, PMA is indeed an emergency. Members of the majority are committed to ensuring that this campaign promise is fulfilled as soon as possible", declared Sacha Houlié, LREM deputy from Vienne. For its part, the association against LGBT-phobias SOS Homophobia recalled: "Equality is not a luxury. LGBT people are not an adjustment variable. The dignity of LGBT people, their family plans have not disappeared with the crisis!".
