After “The Walking Dead” proved to be a hit for the US broadcaster AMC, the makers and especially the former showrunner and current TWD content boss Scott M. Gimple were keen to build a franchise around the series.

The TWD universe now includes a whopping six spin-off series, but not all of them have been released yet. The planned cinema films have now been canceled again and the story of Rick and Michonne is now being told in its own mini-series.

So that you don’t lose track, we’ll explain what the spin-offs are about and how they may be related.

  1. Fear the Walking Dead

  2. The Walking Dead: World Beyond

  3. The spin-off about Rick and Michonne

  4. Tales of the Walking Dead

  5. The Carol and Daryl Spinoff becomes the Daryl Spinoff

  6. Isle of the Dead: The spin-off about Maggie and Negan

  7. This is how the series and films are connected

  8. Here’s what you need to know about the CRM

Fear the Walking Dead

Five years after the start of TWD followed 2015 with “Fear the Walking Dead” the first TWD spin-off. Featuring all-new cast members, a story set during the early days of the zombie apocalypse has been told.

However, due to numerous time jumps, the timelines of FTWD and the parent series TWD crossed and some TWD characters could become part of the spin-off.

Morgan Jones, who was the first person Rick Grimes met on TWD, and ex-Savior Dwight, for example, have become integral parts of the spin-off. In this country you can see FTWD on Amazon Prime Video.

“Fear the Walking Dead” has already been extended for an 8th season, which is currently being filmed.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

A third series from the TWD universe followed in autumn 2020 with “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”. The series is set in a community in Nebraska, ten years after the apocalypse.

The focus is on a group of teenagers belonging to the first generation who grew up in the apocalypse. They want to experience for themselves what lurks behind the walls of their sheltered small town and set off. However, the series only has two seasons, each with ten episodes.

The spin-off about Rick and Michonne

In November 2018, Gimple announced on the TWD talk show Talking Dead, which airs in the US after each new TWD episode, that he plans to direct three TWD feature films.

The lead role will be played by none other than Andrew Lincoln, who is said to play ex-cop Rick Grimes again in the films after he left the parent series.

Also starring is Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh), who Rick handed over to a new, secretive group after the bridge blast. After Danai Gurira left the series, it was also speculated that Michonne could become part of the film franchise. After all, she goes in search of Rick in the series after she finds some clues as to his whereabouts.

Since San Diego Comic-Con 2022 it has been clear that these films will not exist. Instead, a dedicated spin-off series for Rick and Michonne has been announced, which will be released as early as 2023. In it we will most likely see the story that was also planned for the films, with a focus on the two former TWD main characters and their search for each other.

Tales of the Walking Dead

The already confirmed spin-off “Tales of the Walking Dead” will probably step a little out of line. The upcoming anthology series set in the TWD universe will tell a completed story of a character from the original series in each episode. Characters who have already died can also appear again. What is certain is that we will see villain Alpha again.

“Tales of the Walking Dead” starts on August 14, 2022 on the US broadcaster AMC. Where the series will be broadcast in this country is not yet clear. Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ may secure the streaming rights.

The Carol and Daryl Spinoff becomes the Daryl Spinoff

It was originally planned that Carol and Daryl would get a joint spin-off that was supposed to be released in 2023. However, Melissa McBride has since dropped out of the project as filming was to take place in Europe.

Since we are in the last scene of WorldBeyond Having learned that the zombie apocalypse may have originated in France, we could see Daryl searching for the beginning and end of the virus. He may be able to use Commonwealth resources for the crossing to Europe, or the CRM may have a hand.

Isle of the Dead: The spin-off about Maggie and Negan

While it’s been rumored for some time that Negan is getting his own TWD spin-off, the fact that he’s now forming a duo with his nemesis Maggie came as a surprise. In 2023, the TWD offshoot “Isle of the Dead” will be released by AMC. After all, it is already certain that the two will end up in Manhattan, New York City. Cut off from the mainland, they are trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic urban jungle.

This is how the series and films are connected

To get the feeling of a real serialuniverse to awaken, there are of course some connection points between the series and the films. In “The Walking Dead”, “Fear the Walking Dead” and “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” this has so far been expressed through crossovers of some characters and cleverly scattered Easter Eggs.

For example, the attentive FTWD viewer already knew before the airing of the 14th episode of TWD Season 10 that behind Beta’s mask was a famous country singer. In FTWD, actor Ryan Hurst was already seen on a record that the character Daniel dropped.

But since season 8 of TWD, attempts have been made to weave a larger construct around all series and films and to connect all titles. So a mysterious symbol consisting of three rings was shown again and again. The network is behind it “Civic Republic Military”, CRM for short. This also plays an increasingly important role in FTWD and World Beyond.

Here’s what you need to know about the CRM

Initially, the CRM was often referred to as the “Helicopter Squad” due to the constant appearance of helicopters with the three ring logo from TWD Season 8 onwards. Jadis/Anne kept in touch with the group via radio and was supposed to provide them with people, which she divided into “A” and “B” people. Rick belongs to the “B” category. So the CRM will certainly also be part of the Rick and Michonne spin-off.

But the CRM also appeared in FTWD Season 5. Morgan’s group is attacked by undead CRM soldiers. After Al examines the body, a live CRM soldier knocks her out and kidnaps her.

It turns out that behind the soldier’s helmet was Isabelle, who reveals that she is from the CRM and that they and her colleague Beckett were looking for fuel for the helicopters. Since the two women are attracted to each other, they decide not to talk about their encounter. Because Isabelle’s mission is to kill anyone who finds out about the CRM.

It’s also entirely possible that Virginia, the villain from FTWD Season 6, knew about the CRM and wanted to raise an army. Had the CRM discovered the Virginia oil field, it wouldn’t be long before they would want to claim it. The chances are not bad that CRM will become a new opponent for Morgan and Co.

The CRM is a military alliance that also features in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. The CRM massacres the community in Nebraska, the campus colony, killing thousands. Even before this event, the protagonists of the spin-off disappear in order to find the father of the two sisters, Hope and Iris.

Through “World Beyond” we also learn that Jadis/Anne is now a high-ranking CRM soldier. The finale of the series also suggested that we could expect a European spin-off from TWD. This is where the Daryl spin-off could definitely come into play.

In an interview with the US magazine Entertainment Weekly, Scott M. Gimple also revealed that the CRM touches on all series in the TWD universe, but is not the focus of the story.

So the organization is a big common touch point of all the works of the AMC TWD franchise. What role the CRM will play in “Tales of the Walking Dead” and “Isle of the Dead” is not yet clear.
