After 12 years, “The Walking Dead” is now almost a veteran of the modern series world. After the broadcast of the 11th and final season, however, it is far from over. Numerous TWD spin-offs, some with old, familiar characters, are imminent.
Big future plans for the “Walking Dead” franchise
The Chief Content Officer of “The Walking Dead”, Scott M. Gimple, has already announced that the franchise will be expanded with even more series in the future. In 2023, several spin-offs will start at the same time. Including “The Walking Dead: Dead City” with Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon”, in which Daryl (Norman Reedus) travels to France.

In addition, Scott M. Gimple revealed in an AMC blog interview that he would like to expand the existing world of “The Walking Dead” even further. Further series, locations and characters are to appear, also beyond the 3 upcoming series. Specifically, there is even talk of a “new wave” of “The Walking Dead” content.
To this end, his ambitions are clearly aimed at telling more episodic, self-contained stories in the world of The Walking Dead. These are intended to explore characters and locations more closely and no longer necessarily tell a gigantic story that has been building up for years.
An exciting approach to attracting new fans to the franchise who haven’t followed and seen every season of the original over the years. The end of the 11th season of “The Walking Dead” series is now the perfect moment for this.
In addition, Gimple would be happy to integrate more old, surviving characters into the new series and to connect the individual spin-offs in crossovers. This is intended to reinforce the impression of a large, coherent “The Walking Dead world” even further.
Other web series canon episodes such as The Walking Dead: Red Machete and Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462, which AMC has experimented with in the past, would also be possible.
These plans are to be implemented with the first series in 2023 on AMC. One can already predict that in the future we will get many smaller (mini) spin-off series rather than a large, multi-season “The Walking Dead” sequel. Still, a good time for zombie fans!
In addition to the already announced new “The Walking Dead” series, there are already some spin-offs. Including “Fear the Walking Dead”, which started on AMC in 2015 and will soon be in its 8th season.
“The Walking Dead: World Beyond” is also based on the popular zombie series. This year the anthology series “Tales of the Walking Dead” started, which tells one episode each and thus a self-contained story about well-known characters.
So there is a lot on offer for zombie fans. The first thing that awaits us in April 2023 is “The Walking Dead: Dead City” with Maggie and Negan. Until then, you can while away the time with five exciting alternatives to the zombie series.
