The weapons of violent spouses seized "systematically" from the first complaint

Recently, the Interior Ministry Gérald Darmanin and the Minister Delegate Marlène Schiappa sent a request to the prefects to "systematically seize the weapons of violent spouses as soon as the complaint is made"

The seizure of the weapons of violent spouses, immediately after filing a complaint, is permitted from the Grenelle against domestic violence. However, many associations point to the fact that this measure is still too little applied. Thus, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin and the Minister Delegate Marlène Schiappa addressed a few days ago "an instruction to all the prefects in order to systematize the seizures of weapons in matters of domestic violence and this from the time of the complaint ", reveals Place Beauvau in a press release unveiled this Saturday, February 6.

The authorities must then "systematically questioning those present and the victims about the presence of weapons" during interventions but also "check the criminal records – including handrails – of applicants for the possession of weapons".

This measure was voted on last July and is among the actions announced by the government in November 2019 at the end of the Grenelle to fight against domestic violence and feminicides because a third of the victims are killed by firearms.

Last year, 90 women were killed by their spouse or ex-spouse in France. If this figure is the lowest since the establishment of statistics fifteen years ago, each victim is one too many. For associations, it is still too early to celebrate. "We must be extremely careful about the figures that are put forward because we were in quite exceptional configurations in 2020, due to the Covid and the confinement. We will see if the figures are confirmed in 2021, but for the now it is too early to indicate the exact causes ", recently declared Céline Piques, spokesperson for the collective Dare feminism, at France 24.

Since the start of 2021, 9 women died, murdered by their spouse or ex-spouse.
