The week that plunged Peru into political chaos

In one week, the Peruvian political situation has changed. Protests have left at least seven people dead in the country since the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo on December 7. The demonstrators demand new elections and the resignation of the interim president, Dina Boluarte. Tuesday, December 13 in the morning, many roads were blocked in thirteen of the twenty-four regions, according to a police report.

On December 7, the 53-year-old left-wing president ordered the dissolution of Parliament but was followed neither by the army nor by parliamentarians. Shortly after, Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of his impeachment for “moral incapacity”.

Mr. Castillo then went to the Mexican embassy to ask for political asylum. On the way, he was stopped by his bodyguard. He has since been detained for “rebellion”. The vice-president, Dina Boluarte, was elected interim president by the Congress.

During the appeal hearing of his arrest broadcast on December 13 on television, the deposed president launched: “I will never give up. (…) I am unfairly and arbitrarily detained. I am neither a thief, nor a rapist, nor a corrupt person, nor a thug. »
