Although the Grammys want to abolish the much-criticized “Secret Committee”, The Weeknd sticks to its boycott of the awards ceremony.

Despite the rule change initiated last Friday (April 30th), The Weeknd (31) would like to continue boycotting the Grammy Awards. The New York Times said The Canadian singer said he welcomed the organizers’ decision, but would not deviate from his own.

“Although I will no longer submit my music, it is a positive step for the future of this troubled award. As the Grammys recently admitted the corruption, the artist community will now hopefully receive the respect it deserves through a transparent voting process.” the singer explains in a statement.

In the weeks leading up to the music industry’s most famous awards ceremony, The Weeknd repeatedly criticized the organizers for not having nominated his hit “Blinding Lights” for the 63rd edition and announced its boycott two days before the Grammys.

The secret committee was under massive criticism

The artists and their works are actually nominated by the members of the so-called Recording Academy, a non-profit organization from Santa Monica in the US state of California. It is made up of artists, producers and leading figures in the music industry. The problem: some of the most coveted awards, such as the “Song of the Year” and the “Album of the Year”, are determined by a “secret committee”.

At the Friday announced the Academyto want to abolish this. From now on, each of the more than 11,000 members of the organization is to receive one vote. The system has been criticized several times in recent years. Only four black artists have won Grammys in the major categories for nine years, so there is a clear deviation from their chart success.
