THE 2024 finance bill contains a section dedicated to cars. More specifically, it addresses the vehicle weight penalty. This is a tax on those who exceed a certain mass, for the moment 1800kg. We already know that the government wants to lower it to 1,600 kg in 2024, while putting in place a progressive scale. Next year, nothing changes for the hybrid and plug-in hybrid modelsbut they would be affected as soon as 2025.

The text indicates: “for the externally rechargeable hybrid electric vehicle whose equivalent range in all-electric mode in the city, determined upon receipt, is greater than 50 kilometers, the mass in running order is subject to “a reduction of 200 kilograms, within the limit of 15% of this same mass”. And if originally, the electric cars are spared, a proposed amendment could change everything by including in the weight penalty system. Also there in 2025.

The amendment in question says this: “for vehicles whose energy source is exclusively electricity, the mass in running order is subject to a reduction of 300 kilograms, within the limit of 15% of this same mass”. Clear, electric cars whose weight exceeds 1900 kg would be affected by the penalty. For the executive, this represents 0.22% of French brand models sold in the country in 2022. “The observation is the same for electric vehicles assembled in France: only 0.26% of electric vehicles sold and assembled in France weigh more than 1.9 tonnes,” he specifies.

But if the senators explain that electric cars produced in France in 2024 and 2025 will be exempt, like the future Renault R5 E-Tech, the fact remains that many models would find themselves taxed. Especially in the high-end segment, such as the Tesla Model S, Model Y and Model X for example, but also the Volkswagen ID.3 to ID.7as well as several other brands Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota… See the Peugeot E-3008 not yet released. This makes more than 50 cars in all. For the moment, nothing has been decided, the 2024 finance bill must still go back to the National Assembly where the text can be modified.
