The Wheel of Time Season 2: An overview of all filming locations in the fantasy saga from Amazon Prime Video

• The second season of the Amazon series “The Wheel of Time” starts on September 1, 2023.
• In the fantasy saga we have been seeing numerous picturesque backdrops since season 1.
• But these are by no means all CGI, but rather real places in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Spain and Morocco.

Fans of Robert Jordan’s successful book series have been waiting a long time for a fantasy series based on “The Wheel of Time” and in 2021 the time had finally come. The first season quickly became one of Amazon Prime Video’s most successful series and the impressive setting of “The Wheel of Time” will have played a part in this. But where did the fictional world of the wheel come to life?

While the fantasy saga of “The Lord of the Rings” was filmed in New Zealand, “The Wheel of Time” took its cue from “Game of Thrones” and “The Witcher” and filmed in Eastern Europe.

The locations in season 1 were the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Croatia. Things then got more exotic for Season 2, with filming continuing in the Canary Islands, Italy and Morocco.

A studio was built specifically for the production of “The Wheel of Time” in the Letnany district of Prague, which was named after the author of the book “Jordan Studios”. In this studio, the White Tower, the city-state of Tar Valon, and the fallen city of Shadar Logoth were brought to life. The interior of the temple of Shadar Logoth was filmed in the former German church Kostel svatého Václava (Church of St Wenzel Sonnenberg).

The fictional City of Two Rivers, where the adventure of Rand and his friends began, was realized not far from Prague. During the Trolloc attack, the set was burned down, destroying not only the city in the series but also in the real world.

Other filming locations in the Czech Republic were the Jeskyne Rozborenka rocks in Kokorínsko and Dolsky mlyn (Grundmühle) as well as Pravcická brána (Prebischtor) in Bohemian Switzerland. For example, Britannia from “Carnival Row” was also realized here. The picturesque setting in the Velká Amerika was also used for “The Wheel of Time” as well as the rock sculptures of the harp player near Zelízy and the city backdrop of Theresienstadt (Terezín).

In Slovenia, the town of Bovec and the village of Soca were primarily used as filming locations. But the Rakov Škocjan Valley, the Great Soča Trough, the Mangart Saddle and the Napoleon’s Bridge (Napoleonov most) also found their way into the series. In Croatia, as with GoT, filming took place in Dubrovnik, but also on the picturesque coast of the Adriatic Sea.

For the second season, filming was partially relocated to southern Europe and North Africa. The province of Segovia in Spain had to be the model for the city of Ghealdan; Playa de Benijo on Tenerife is the beach of the Westland. The Italian towns of Ginosa and Calanchi di Aliano are also part of the setting of “The Wheel of Time”. The new series was filmed in Ouarzazate and the CLA Studios in Morocco.

However, it remains to be seen which places we will see in the second season of “The Wheel of Time”. However, the first three episodes of the new season will appear on September 1, 2023. In all likelihood we will then be able to look forward to new episodes every Friday.
