The White House says Biden and Chinese President Xi could talk to each other in the coming weeks.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if, in the coming weeks, President Biden and President Xi talk to each other again,” he said.

Sullivan spoke Wednesday with Yang Jiechi, a key foreign policy adviser to Xi, and said he had been “direct with him about our concerns about North Korea’s nuclear and missile activities and from our point of view that this is not in China’s interest”.

“It’s not in America’s interest, and that China should consider taking all possible measures to reduce the possibility of a provocative act by North Korea, … we had a good exchange on this subject,” he said, adding that Taiwan and other issues were also discussed.

Biden lands in South Korea on Friday evening, where he meets new President Yoon Suk-yeol with North Korea high on the agenda.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has abandoned a freeze on intercontinental ballistic missile testing and appears set to resume nuclear bomb testing, possibly while Biden is in the region.
