When Alfred Hitchcock shot “The Window to the Court”, the legendary director was on the verge of the peak of his cinematic work. The virtuoso filmmaker Hitchcock had already shot “Murder on the Call”, “The Stranger on the Train” and “Cocktail for a Corpse” in 1954 – his best-known films were to be “Vertigo”, “Psycho”, “The Invisible Third” and “The birds” but still to come.

“The Courtyard Window”: An Unusual Classic Hitchcock

With “The Window to the Court” the Brit presented one of his most unusual productions. Like many of his works, the film is a psychological thriller – but it essentially takes place in a single apartment. To be more precise, in front of the eponymous window to the courtyard.

James Stewart, next to Cary Grant probably Hitchcock’s most important leading actor, is condemned to stay in his apartment with his leg in a cast throughout the film. And there, despite visits from the immortal Grace Kelly, he succumbs to the voyeuristic urge to observe the neighbors and their goings-on through his camera lens.

What then develops are the classic ingredients for a well-seasoned Hitchcock film: fear, suspicions, delusional fits – and of course real deadly danger.
