The creator of a mod, adding fully modeled vulvas in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, accuses CD Projekt Red of having used his project without his consent. This may be a whole other problem for the Polish studio.
The vulvas spotted in the latest version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will they become a much more troublesome problem for CD Projekt Red? This is suggested by an article by Kotaku published on February 13, 2023. We discover that the creator of the mod called “Vagina’s for Everyone” would not have given his consent for his project to be used in the big update of the RPG, released in 2015.
Kotaku was able to speak briefly with the creator, who indicated that CD Projekt Red uses his mod well. Nevertheless, he was unaware of it and the Polish studio would never have asked his permission. As a reminder, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received, in December, a big update giving the game a second youth. It is based on improvements designed internally, but also on the work of some members of the community. CD Projekt Red has also recognized that the vulvas, fully modeled, were from a mod.
Will vulvas in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt become a legal matter?
In short, what at first appeared only as an embarrassing little problem for CD Projekt Red (which planned to remove the textures modeling these genitals a little too well) could turn into a legal affair. In a subject published in December on the official forums, the Polish company confided: We include several popular mods in the update (depending on the platform). We got permission from the creators, rewarded them and they will be credited in the game. The mods have been reworked and optimized as needed, and the game tweaked to make everything work. »
Everything suggests that the creator of “Vagina’s for Everyone” did not benefit from the treatment set out above. As proof, the mod does not appear in the long list retained by CD Projekt Red, accessible at this address. There has, it seems, been a concern for communication between the two parties, perhaps wanted by the studio so that the inclusion of “Vagina’s for Everyone” – a mod nevertheless very daring – is little noticed. Whether intentional or not, this error is turning against CD Projekt Red.
Of course, to assert his rights (if he wants to), the creator of “Vagina’s for Everyone” will have to prove that it is indeed his work that is used in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. In the description available on the Nexus Mods portal, we can see that his project, which represents almost 190,000 downloads, goes even further than what is visible in the RPG available to everyone.
There is a reason behind this difference: you have to install another mod, focused on nudity, to prevent “Vagina’s for Everyone” is censored (in particular by lingerie). Without it, the very realistically modeled vulvas only concern a few protagonists crossed in the game and exclude the heroines (Ciri, Yennefer). This point suggests that the developers could hardly notice if they integrated “Vagina’s for Everyone” by mistake. The thesis of the blunder therefore seems plausible, as well as a late discovery, compared to the date of availability of the new version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
