The Witcher: Are Geralt and Ciri related? How can that be?

THE WITCHER

The “The Witcher” Preuqel “Blood Origin” reveals more about Geralt and Ciri’s special relationship. Not only does this go far back, it makes the two of them even more of a family with a great burden.

  • Blood Origin was released on December 25, 2022 as a prequel to The Witcher.
  • The mini-series was only received to a limited extent by fans and critics, but we learned a lot about the history of “The Witcher” through it.
  • Unplanned, more about Geralt and Ciri was also revealed.

The “The Witcher” spin-off “Blood Origin” is not insignificant for the main series, despite mixed reviews. Very subtly and unwittingly, the miniseries tells us more about Geralt and Ciri’s distant family relationships.

In addition, many other exciting revelations were made in “Blood Origin”, which already tell us more about the future of the franchise and the “The Witcher” series.

Ciri’s oldest blood makes relatives out of her and Geralt

As a child of the Elder Blood, Ciri possesses tremendous magical abilities and the ability to travel between time and space. Through Lara Dorren’s bloodline going back thousands of years, she descended from the elves Fjall and Éile, who fought Empress Merwyn in “Blood Origin”.

In this battle, Fjall underwent dangerous magical mutations that made him the first “proto-sorcerer”. Before his death, however, he and Eíle fathered another child, who became the first bearer of the Eldest Blood. This secret, the Elder Blood and the associated prophecy of the Ithlinne were passed on from generation to generation. Until they mixed with the royal family of Cintra, from which Ciri descends.

Good monster genes in the family

This is not where the relationship between Geralt and Ciri comes from, as Geralt’s parents are known to have been the warrior Korin and the sorceress Visenna. However, since he joined the witcher order as a foundling, he, like Ciri’s primeval ancestor Fjall, completed the herbal test in which his DNA was crossed with that of monsters.

As a result, Geralt and Ciri share the same “monster genes”, albeit to a small degree. An unusual affinity that you probably don’t know about (yet). This unusual connection between the two, never directly addressed in the Blood Origin spin-off, will weave their destinies even more together.

Perhaps even more than the admittedly very thin blood relationship, their relationship is special and destined for greater things in that Ciri is descended from the first witcher and Geralt is one of Fjall’s successors and the last witcher of his kind.

This bond between the witcher and his fate-chosen foundling only grows stronger, with the potential to devastate the world – or save it. In the coming battle against the Aen Elle and the Wild Hunt, they will need to surpass themselves to survive. And while “Blood Origin” didn’t work extremely well on its own as a series, it still showed us these new facets and backgrounds of the protagonists and enriched the Witcher saga as a result.
