Collider recently spoke with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Declan de Barra, the co-creator of The Witcher: Legacy of Blood, about the series ending and where the Expanded Universe could go. The designer is very clear on the subject:
My goal with the executives at Netflix has always been to have an end point in mind, because for me, when you start writing stories without knowing where they’re going, you can get lost. (…) Yes, I absolutely know where the series will end. I know what season it’s going to end in, I know how it’s going to end, which is very, very exciting.
She then explains that The Lady of the Lakefifth novel by Andrzej Sapkowski in the saga of novels The Witcher, will be the last book treated in The Witcher. But as the book delves into Arthurian legend, the potential for story development beyond the series is enormous.
“I’ve been asked a lot if there will be more sequels, prequels, and spinoffs. I think Sapkowski’s books are kind of limitless in a lot of wayssays Hissrich. She jokingly adds that the show could last long enough for her to turn gray and end up playing Geralt herself.
Readers of the books will not have all the answers
However, just because you’ve read the books doesn’t mean future seasons will follow Sapkowski’s plot. As Hissrich says again:
“A lot of people think we go into a season thinking it’s going to be like this or that book, but that’s something we couldn’t do. For example, season 2 is loosely based on the book Blood of the Elves. There wasn’t enough action for us to continue, so we ended up having to incorporate parts of Baptism by fire.
Parts of early news, like A grain of truth which kicked off Season 2. We know we have to be flexible with how the books are divided versus how the seasons are arranged. I kind of had that in my head from the very beginning.“
So don’t expect the narrative to always be linear, and with so many time jumps, journeys to different realms, and reliance on magic… everything is bound to be mixed up. Add to that the potential for more spin-offs and more stories to tell, nothing is set in stone…
